Ducts are hidden in walls, ceilings and attics, so most people only notice the effects of dirty ducts. These are the signs our customers mention most often.
1. Dust comes back quickly
If furniture needs dusting again a day or two after you clean, the HVAC system may be blowing dust out of the ducts each time it runs.
2. Gray buildup on the vent covers
Dark rings or fuzz around supply registers, or a thick layer on the return grille, usually means the inside of the duct looks the same or worse.
3. A musty smell when the system runs
An odor that shows up only when the AC or heat turns on often comes from the ducts or the air handler. In coastal cities like Huntington Beach and Newport Beach, damp air makes this more common.
4. Pet hair at the vents
Fur that you can see through floor or wall registers is collecting inside the ducts too.
5. Allergy symptoms indoors
If sneezing or itchy eyes ease when you leave the house, dust and dander in the system may be part of the reason.
6. You recently remodeled
Remodeling dust gets pulled into the return side and keeps circulating until it is cleaned out.
If you notice two or more of these signs, it is worth having the ducts inspected. We look inside before we quote, and we show you photos.
